Biography
In this role, Juan Torres oversees continuing efforts at the laboratory's Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) to strengthen the security and resilience of the nation's electrical grid. He leads NREL's global initiative to optimize links between electricity, fuel, thermal, water, and communication networks in order to develop and demonstrate new technologies to modernize the grid. Prior to joining NREL in June 2017, Torres served as a longtime employee of the U.S. Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories as an electrical engineer, in several management positions, and most recently as deputy to the vice president for energy and climate programs. At Sandia, Torres led efforts in cybersecurity, guided investments in advanced energy research, and led the security and resilience team under the DOE's multi-lab effort to modernize the nation's electrical grid. Torres holds a bachelor's degree in electronics engineering technology from the University of Southern Colorado and a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Mexico.
