Biography
Dr. Maas is a research neuroscientist, a medical educator, and a clinically active neurologist and critical care specialist. In his clinical practice, he manages high-risk injuries and diseases of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system in the Neuro/Spine Intensive Care Unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. His research focuses on the detection and management of evolving neurologic symptoms in critically ill patients, with an emphasis on understanding the role of the circadian system and impaired brain arousal. He directed the fellowship in neurocritical care at Northwestern for several years, now serving as the associate program director, as well as faculty in the neurology and anesthesiology residency programs, the surgical critical care and vascular neurology fellowship programs, and a lecturer to medical and law students on neuroscience and bioethics.
