Omar Abdelaziz, Ph.D. is currently a Senior Research Staff and Group Leader of the Building Equipment Research Group - part of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Building Technologies and Integration Center (BTRIC). Dr. Abdelaziz graduated from the A. James Clark School of Engineering in 2009 with a Ph.D. in mechanical Engineering working on novel heat exchanger design and optimization. In 2009, he joined the Whole Building and Community Integration group at BTRIC. In 2012, Dr. Abdelaziz relocated to Washington D.C. to support the U.S. Department of Energy Building Technologies Office (BTO) as a Senior Fellow. In his capacity as a Senior Fellow at BTO, Dr. Abdelaziz was responsible for technology characterization, evaluation, and prioritization. He was able to further the development of the BTO technology prioritization tool and support the development of the BTO Emerging Technologies program multi-year-program plan. He was also actively engaged in developing office metrics and strategic decisions. In 2014, Dr. Abdelaziz returned back to ORNL in September 2014 and became the Building Technologies Group Leader. He is currently responsible for an experienced group of researchers with research expertise varying from 1 to 40 years of experience. Dr. Abdelaziz has more than 70 publications, 1 book, 2 patents, and more than 20 invention disclosures. He won the best paper award from the AIAA in 2005 and presented his work in national and international conferences and was selected as keynote speaker at the Second Asia Air Source Heat Pump Development Forum, China 2013, Wuxi, China, June 19 – 20, 2013.. He is also an active member in ASHRAE where he help establish the MTG.Lower GWP Refrigerants and the Task Group on Optimization (now TC1.13). Dr. Abdelaziz' 12 years of R&D and project management experience include building energy efficient technologies, sustainable energy production and utilization, energy storage, technology evaluation and prioritization, thermodynamic analysis, thermo-fluid engineering, computational fluid dynamics, engineering optimization, alternative cooling and heating technologies, and lower global warming refrigerants. Dr. Abdelaziz actively collaborate with a leading U.S. appliance manufacturers on the development of advanced and state of the art HVAC&R equipment. Awards A. James Clark School of Engineering Future Faculty Fellowship; 2007 - 2009 A. James Clark School of Engineering Fellowship; 2006 - 2009 Best Paper Award in Terrestrial Energy, AIAA; January 2005 Cairo University Excellence Award; 1998 - 2003
