Scott Hersey

Biography

Dr. Hersey joined Olin in 2015 from South Africa, where he had several roles: 1) conducting research on air quality in low-income areas of the country, 2) working with government, community, and industry stakeholders to develop effective offset programs for improving South African air quality, 3) serving in national leadership of a community development NGO, and 4) co-founding and managing a social enterprise business called Jozi’s Nut Butters, and subsequently transferring ownership to a community-owned trust. Prior to his work in South Africa, Dr. Hersey served as Adjunct Assistant Professor in both Engineering and Chemistry at Harvey Mudd College, where he developed a passion for effective and innovative undergraduate education. He holds a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and B.A. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Rice University, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. His Ph.D. dissertation focused on the chemical composition of aerosol particles and their impact on urban air quality, cloud microphysics, and climate. His research and teaching interests are at the interaction between human populations and the environment, with a focus on anthropogenic air pollution and its impact on human health, meteorology, and global climate. His true passion in life is coming alongside people and communities to help them fully reach their unique potential.
