Biography

Dr. Meaney is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perlman School of Medicine. His initial medical training is in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics; he completed his Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at CHOP and his Master’s on Public Health degree at Harvard University. Dr. Meaney is a nationally and internationally recognized pediatric resuscitation scientist, and has provided over 40 presentations at national and international meetings and has published over 40 manuscripts. He has developed, implemented and led training programs at 11 sites in 8 countries. Dr. Meaney’s identification of gaps in provider training in these environments has led to a global response for more research in this area. Dr. Meaney has held leadership positions in the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Committee as well as the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) since 2008, and in 2014 served as a temporary advisor to the World Health Organization. He has driven paradigm shifts in resuscitation education and training in the resource-limited setting. His current focus is on improving care at the district hospital level, and has led development and implementation the Saving Children’s Lives program. SCL improves care delivery of first level and district hospital healthcare workers for acute child illnesses such as pneumonia, diarrhea and sepsis. Since 2013, SCL has trained over 500 providers in Botswana, Tanzania and India. Data shows that SCL implementation has both increased provider knowledge and reduced pediatric mortality, and is a feasible and sustainable Ministry of Health essential child survival program.
