Biography

John has 24 years’ direct experience in petroleum industry consulting. He completed a Ph.D. on Scottish Jurassic foraminifera and radiolaria (Hull, 1992). Has diverse experience, having worked on Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic sections in disparate regions including the North Sea, West of Shetland, Irish Sea, Canada, Greenland, USA, Gulf of Mexico, Russia, South China Seas (China, Vietnam, Thailand), circum-Mediterranean, circum-Black Sea, Caspian, Middle East, North, West & South Africa and Caribbean. His primary expertise is Jurassic to Cenozoic micropalaeontology, including siliceous microfossils (radiolaria, diatoms & silicoflagellates). Has provided wellsite services worldwide, with extensive experience throughout the North Sea (Danish, Dutch, Norwegian & UK sectors), Italy, Libya, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Gulf of Mexico, Trinidad and the South China Seas. Wellsite assignments include ‘biosteering’ of >100 horizontal development wells, casing picks (HP/HT & H2S settings) and numerous long duration overseas wild-cat wells. John’s directorial duties within PetroStrat include Marketing and Technical matters. John remains active in academic circles and is President of TMS and was Chief Editor of the Journal of Micropalaeontology (6 years) and has served on several committees of the Geological Society including the Stratigraphy Commission. He is Honorary lecturer at the University of Birmingham (MSc course), a Scientific Associate at the Natural History Museum, London and co-supervises a number of MSc and PhD students.
