Biography
Dr. Freda C. Lewis-Hall, M.D., DFAPA, has been the Chief Medical Officer of Pfizer Inc. since May 2009 and has been its Executive Vice President since December 2010. Dr. Lewis-Hall has an extensive leadership experience across multiple functional areas in the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Lewis-Hall served as Senior Vice President of Pfizer Inc. from May 2009 to December 2010. Dr. Lewis-Hall served as an Executive Vice President of Medicines Development at Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated from June 2008 to May 2009 and served as its Chief Medical Officer until May 2009. She was responsible for Regulatory Affairs, Clinical and Non-clinical Development, Medical Affairs and Commercial Development at Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. She served as Senior Vice President of U.S. Pharmaceuticals and Medical Affairs at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company from 2003 to May 2008 and was responsible for medical strategy and execution across five major therapeutic areas. Prior to Bristol-Myers Squibb, Dr. Lewis-Hall served as Vice President, Research and Development and Product Development for Pharmacia Corporation and served in a number of positions for Eli Lilly and Company from 1994 to 2002, where she was involved in the development and launch of dozens of new drugs over the last decade. Previously, Dr. Lewis-Hall held leadership positions at the National Institute of Mental Health and at the Howard University College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. She serves as a Director at The Foundation For The National Institutes of Health Inc. She has been a Trustee of Save The Children Federation, Incorporated since March 2012. She served as an Independent Director of Tenet Healthcare Corp. since December 2014 until May 4, 2017. Dr. Lewis-Hall was Vice Chairperson and an Associate Professor in Howard University College of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry from 1988 to 1994. Her publications include the book “Psychiatric Illness in Women: Emerging Trends and Research“ and a number of journal articles on diagnosing and treating mental health. She is a well-known Speaker and Television Commentator on the effects of illness on patients, families and communities as well as healthcare disparities, mental illness and women's health issues. She maintained a private practice in both the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Dr. Lewis-Hall is a Fellow of the American Academy of Psychiatry. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and serves as a member of the Board of Governors for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute and of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health. She received a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree in Natural Sciences from The Johns Hopkins University and Medical Doctorate from Howard University Hospital and College of Medicine.
