Biography
Dr. John H. Hutchinson, Ph.D. is the Co-Founder of PharmAkea Inc and serves as its President. Dr. Hutchinson served as a Senior Vice President of Research at BrainCells Inc. in San Diego and served as its Vice President of Chemistry. Prior to joining BrainCells Inc., Dr. Hutchinson co-founded Amira Pharmaceuticals Inc. in 2005 and served as its Vice President of Chemistry. Dr. Hutchinson served as Director of Medicinal Chemistry at Merck & Co. uring his five-year tenure at Amira, the research group discovered five novel compounds that completed Phase 1 clinical trials. Prior to Amira, Dr. Hutchinson spent 17 years with Merck Research Laboratories where he was Director of Chemistry. During his tenure with Merck, he produced two compounds that completed Phase II clinical studies (MK0591 and MK0429) and numerous safety assessment candidates for a variety of therapeutic indications including diseases of the central nervous system, inflammation, oncology, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Dr. Hutchinson completed his undergraduate degree at The University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (1st Class Honors) and obtained a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from The University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
