Biography
Gary Cates is chief philanthropy officer for ProMedica. He has held a number of leadership roles in acute and ambulatory care throughout ProMedica, most recently serving as president of ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital and ProMedica Transportation Network. Prior to joining ProMedica, Cates was a manager with Johnson Controls, Inc., a press secretary with the U.S. House of Representatives, a reporter with the Observer and Eccentric Newspapers in Livonia, Michigan and an adjunct business instructor at Spring Arbor University. Cates has a Master of Business Administration in finance and international business degree from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Michigan State University. He is a founding member of the Defiance 2100 economic development committee. He is also a member of the State Bank Financial Group / State Bank Board of Directors and the United Way of Defiance County Executive Board. In 2013, Cates was appointed by Governor John Kasich to the Ohio Board of Emergency Services, Fire, and Transportation. Additionally, Cates has served as the president of the Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce Board and the Hospital of Lenawee Board in Michigan, as well as a member of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Francis Family YMCA Board of Directors in Bedford, Michigan, and the Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio Board of Directors.
