Biography
Board certified in maternal-fetal medicine and in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Cheryl Albuquerque joined Valley Children’s in July 2015 as director of perinatal outreach, Maternal Fetal Division. Her interest in maternal health began when, as a teenager in Mumbai, India, she volunteered in a home Mother Theresa had established for single pregnant women. After graduating from Grant Medical College, Mumbai, Dr. Albuquerque then served as a visiting research scholar in reproductive endocrinology at Stanford University Medical Center. Following a transitional internship at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan, Dr. Albuquerque completed her residency and subsequently served as chief resident in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Illinois, College of Medicine, in Peoria, Illinois. She then held a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Harbor UCLA. She is currently completing a physician MBA program through the Harbert College of Business, in Auburn, Alabama. Dr. Albuquerque comes to Valley Children’s from Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Perinatal Evaluation Unit, in San Jose, California, where she implemented, led and directed the first-trimester screening program for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Valley Medical Center, San Jose. Dr. Albuquerque is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, International Society of Prenatal Diagnosis, American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, SMFM Coding Committee, and of the American Telemedicine Association. She is also a reviewer for the “American Journal of Perinatology.” She has published her work in various peer-reviewed publications, such as the “Journal of Maternal Fetal Medicine,” “American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology” and “Early Human Development.” Her mission is to provide quality care for maternal and fetal health. Reduced fetal growth is strongly associated with a number of chronic conditions later in life, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke and hypertension. Dr. Albuquerque believes that by providing high-quality prenatal care and maintaining a line of communication with referring physicians, Valley Children’s team of perinatologists can not only influence the health of mothers and babies but also the health of the nation. Married with two daughters, in her free time Dr. Albuquerque enjoys sailing and playing the accordion.
