Biography

 Dr. Ricardo Avena is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Born and raised in Mexico City, Dr. Avena attended medical school at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Upon graduation, Dr. Avena received his certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. He completed his General Surgery Residency at the University of Connecticut in Hartford, Connecticut. In addition to his training in general surgery, Dr. Avena also completed a three year Post-Doctoral Surgery Research Fellowship at the VA Medical Center / George Washington University, Washington, D.C., where he published several research papers and was awarded multiple regional and national awards. Dr. Avena then completed a fellowship in critical care before at the University of Connecticut. He then went on to complete an additional fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at The Kleinert Institute / University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Avena is certified for the Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand by the American Board of Surgery. This specialty training along with many years of clinical practice makes him an expert in complex hand and wrist injuries. He particularly caring for acute complex fractures of the wrist. In addition to his private Hand Surgery Practice, Dr. Avena is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at USCF-Fresno Campus. He is married and has two children, and he enjoys outdoor activities with his family. Dr. Avena also enjoys a variety of sports including horseback riding, sailing, swimming, and skiing.
