Biography
Dr. June Carland Hammond is a professional conductor and bassoonist, dedicated to the art of teaching. She has performed with Luciano Pavarotti, Ray Charles, Yanni, and The Moody Blues. She has taught music history, music theory, conducting, chorus, concert band, piano, and chamber music at Saint Leo, as well as all the woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of both the South Shore Symphony Orchestra and Wesley Chapel Wind Ensemble, she is in demand as a conductor year-round. She won a national bassoon audition for the Cleveland Orchestra’s Blossom Festival, and performs frequently in the Tampa Bay area. Concerti performances include works by Vivaldi, Mozart, Weber, and Bozza. Dr. Hammond is a licensed Florida Music Educators’ Association Adjudicator, and teaches conducting and double reeds at regional band camps. She competes and consults in musical freestyle dressage when time allows on her Hanoverian mare, Pretext.
Research Interest
Saint Leo hired Dr. Hammond in 2000 to re-start the music program. Tenured and promoted to Associate Professor of Music in 2005, she enjoys teaching young musicians, offering workshops in area public schools. Her students have been successful at All-State, All-County, and Solo & Ensemble competitions, and have won positions in prestigious ensembles such as the Tampa Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. Seeing new trends in conducting, she began serious study in 2012 as a Fellow at the Conductors Institute (USC), completing the Advanced Graduate Certificate in Conducting at USF in Spring, 2015, post-doctoral. She conducts/performs in about 20 concerts each year.
