Marguerite Mcinnis

Biography

Marguerite McInnis is a native Floridian, born in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. McInnis received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Thomas Edison State University. She then completed her graduate work at Florida State University earning her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and Ph.D. in Social Work with a concentration in marriage and the family. Her clinical training at Florida State University focused on Brief Treatments that primarily attended to the field of trauma. Her teaching interests include policy, gerontology, research, and social work practice. Her research interests include aging, particularly Alzheimer’s caregiving and trauma. Dr. McInnis has served in a variety of capacities at Saint Leo University: Director of Field Education, Department of Social Work; Chair of the Department of Undergraduate Social Work; and Dean of the School of Education and Social Services. Currently, she is the Chair of the Department of Undergraduate Social Work at Saint Leo.

Research Interest

Teaching & Professional Interests: Dr. McInnis is committed to social work education. She is involved in curriculum development that operationalizes the Council on Social Work Education competencies and practice behaviors; assessment of student acquisition of competencies and practice behaviors, and curriculum changes that reflect assessment outcomes. She loves teaching and understands that it is necessary to create a learning environment that is structured, safe and yet intellectually challenging. She believes that academic rigor, student accountability, and learning connected to community lay the foundation for professional social work practice. Dr. McInnis was clinically trained in brief treatments, especially in Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) and practiced prior to coming to Saint Leo to teach. She has engaged in research on homelessness and issues of aging, specifically caregiving.
