Biography
Dr. Fred Blattner is perhaps best known for determining the complete 4.6-million basepair genome sequence of E. coli, the workhorse bacterium of molecular biology. As a professor of genetics at UW-Madison, his scientific interests focused on unraveling basic processes of replication, recombination, transcription and evolution. As a business founder, he focused on computational bioinformatics including structural biology, DNA sequencing, and gene expression software (DNASTAR, Inc.), E. coli genome modification, vaccine development and fermentation (Scarab Genomics, LLC) and DNA chip technology (NimbleGen, Inc.).He has co-authored over 200 papers, 24 in Nature or Science and is co-inventor on over 30 issued patents worldwide. The three companies he cofounded remain a strong employment presence in Madison, Wisconsin.
