Biography
Mr. Richard I. Beattie, also known as Dick, is the Founder of New Visions for Public Schools and serves as its Co-Chairman of the Board. Mr. Beattie serves as Chairman and Partner of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP since 1977. He concentrates on mergers and acquisitions; leveraged buyouts; and corporate law and finance. He has counseled numerous boards and non-management directors on governance issues, investigations and litigation involving corporate officers and other crisis situations. He has also participated in some of the larger and more complex financial transactions, including the merger of America Online and Time Warner, the merger of WellPoint Health Networks with Anthem Inc. and the merger of J.P. Morgan Chase with Bank One. Mr. Beattie served as Non-Executive Chairman at Heidrick & Struggles International, Inc. since May 29, 2007 until July 6, 2017 and its Lead Independent Director since July 6, 2017. Mr. Beattie serves as a Member of the Board of Directors of the National Women's Law Center, as well as a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Vice Chairman of the Boards of Overseers and Managers of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Chairman of the Board of Managers of Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases. He also has many years of experience in government service having worked in the Carter Administration and as a Special Advisor and Emissary for Cypress during the Clinton Administration. He served as the Chairman of Harley-Davidson, Inc. since April 25, 2015 until April 30, 2016. He serves as the Director of Intertainer, Inc. He has been an Independent Director at Evercore Partners Inc. since February 19, 2010 and Heidrick & Struggles International, Inc. since March 2002. Mr. Beattie served as Lead Director of Harley-Davidson, Inc. since February 7, 2012 until April 30, 2016 and served as its Director August 1996 until April 30, 2016. He served as a Director of The Partnership for New York City, Inc. He joined Simpson Thacher in 1968 after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Prior to law school, he served four years in the Marine Corps as a jet pilot, after graduating from Dartmouth College in 1961.
