Steve Massick

Biography

 Dr. Massick joined the staff at Southwest Sciences as a Senior Research Scientist in October, 2001 and was promoted to Principal Research Scientist in 2012. From 1997 to 2001 he was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of California, Santa Barbara where he studied reactive intermediates of solution phase homogeneous catalysts using time-resolved infrared spectroscopy. In 1996 and 1997 he studied gas phase Mg(NH3)n complexes using photoelectron and TOF mass spectrometric techniques at the Universite de Paris Sud, Orsay, France. At Utah his studies involved the spectroscopic characterization of excited states of neutral metal atom-rare gas van der Waals complexes. Dr Massick's accomplishments include 1) discovery of a new class of strongly bound, doubly-excited valence states of neutral metal atom-rare gas van der Waals molecules, 2) characterization and kinetic studies of short-lived reactive intermediates of cobalt hydroformylation catalysts at elevated temperatures and pressures, 3) investigation of trends in ionization energies of Mg(NH3)n clusters, and 4) spectroscopic characterization including rotational simulations of Δ, Π and Σ orbital alignments of the valence and Rydberg triplet excited states of the MgAr van der Waals molecule.
