Biography
Dr. McDermut received his PhD in clinical psychology from American University in 1995. He completed his internship at Brown University’s Clinical Psychology Internship Consortium. He completed a two year post-doctoral fellowship at Brown University’s School of Medicine. After receiving a Young Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, he was appointed to Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Brown University’s School of Medicine. He then taught psychology for two years in a newly developed graduate program at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, before coming to St John’s University in 2001. He completed another post-doctoral fellowship in Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy at the Albert Ellis Institute from 2002 to 2004.
Research Interest
Dr. McDermut has conducted research on addictions and cognitive factors in anxiety and depression. He has diverse research interests in the area of mood disorders, including psychosocial treatment, family functioning, comorbidity, and psychobiology, as they relate to depression. More recently, his research has focused on the validity of psychiatric diagnoses, especially personality disorders, and the role of anger disorders in the psychiatric nomenclature. His current research endeavors are devoted to the assessment of and conceptualization of personality disorders and psychopathology more broadly.
