Christopher Romano

Biography

Christopher Romano is a Research Assistant Professor at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York and a researcher within the Material Culture Research Group where he co-directs the Sustainable Futures study abroad program in the cloud forest of Costa Rica. He holds a M. Arch degree, with a concentration in architectural theory and design, from the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 2005, he received the CHAIR’S AWARD for consistent, high-caliber design work performed in the studios. His research practice and teaching explores the relationship between design, construction and the contemporary culture of building by leveraging regional manufacturing and material processes for his own work, his student’s work, and for projects that benefit the community. Romano currently teaches courses in beginning design, comprehensive design, and digital fabrication with an emphasis on full-scale experimentation and material research. In 2011, he was awarded the 2010-2011 ACSA/AIAS New Faculty Teaching Award and was also awarded the “Lois Gibbs Fellowship” which brings together grassroot activists and politicians to improve the environment and health in Western New York neighborhoods. He is a licensed architect in the state of New York, NCARB Certified, LEED certified and principal of Studio NORTH, an independent research office dedicated to working on projects creatively and inventively with ideas of construction. Romano’s work has been exhibited in NYC at the Center for Architecture, University of Nebraska, Costa Rica, and the various locations throughout Western New York.
