Biography
Dr. Alicia Slater is a molecular ecologist whose research focuses on freshwater invertebrates. She also has interests in the scholarship of teaching and learning, particularly in how learner-centered pedagogies can improve performance in introductory biology courses. Dr. Slater has also led the implementation of several strategies aimed at improving student performance and increasing retention of biology majors, including Stetson's Peer Instruction program (SPI), course resequencing, and a new model for advising students in high enrollment majors. She served as the Provost Faculty Fellow and in that capacity developed new faculty orientation, a yearlong series of faculty development workshops, and the inaugural Brown Innovation Fellows Summer Institute, which trained facultyto implement flipped pedagogies in their classrooms. Professor Slater currently serves as Stetson's University Director for Curriculum and Assessment. She oversees assessment of General Education and program learning outcomes for the School of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, and School of Music. She and a cadre of Departmental Assessment coordinators work together to use empirical evidence to learn about and improve student learning at Stetson. She is currently leading Stetson's conversion to an electronic platform for General Education Assessment. She has also served as scorer for AAC&U's VALUE project. As Director of Curriculum, Dr. Slater oversees course development and enhancements and the development and enhancement of programs across the University. She helped develop a streamlined system for proposal review and leads the effort to make data-driven curriculum decisions wherever possible.
