Gerry Stokes

Biography

Dr. GERALD STOKES began serving SBU as visiting Professor in 2014, and had served as a research professor in 2009. His current research interests include the evolution of the smart grid and the policy that influences its development; and alternative paths to reducing both carbon dioxide emissions to and their burden in the Earth’s atmosphere. He is the President of the New York Energy Policy Institute. Prior to coming to SBU his was the Associate Laboratory Director at Brookhaven National Laboratory for Global and Regional Solutions. He was President and CEO of Battelle-Japan, the founding director of the Joint Global Change Research Institute, a collaborative effort between the Pacific NW National Laboratory (PNNL) and the University of Maryland. Also at PNNL, he was Associate Laboratory Director of the Environmental and Health Sciences Directorate, the Chief Scientist for the DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program, a global climate research network, and the End Use Load and Conservation Assessment Program (ELCAP), a ground breaking study of electric end-use in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Stokes received a B.A. in Physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz and an MS. And PhD from the University of Chicago in 1971 and 19977 respectively. He is a member of Sigma Xi and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
