Richard Firstman

Biography

Rick Firstman is an award-winning journalist, author, and editor and a former reporter and editor at Newsday. Firstman has written eight books, most recently A Criminal Injustice, an examination of the conviction and 17-year imprisonment of Long Islander Martin Tankleff. Among Firstman’s other previous books is The Death of Innocents (with Jamie Talan), which was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and won a coveted Edgar Award. Prior to his career as a full-time author, Firstman spent sixteen years as a staff writer and editor at Newsday. As the newspaper’s reporter-at-large, he won numerous national and regional awards. He has written for a variety of magazines and been a contributing producer for 60 Minutes. In addition to teaching at Stony Brook’s School of Journalism, Firstman has been a member of the adjunct faculty at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
