Biography
Dr. Omar Z. Fisher is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Temple University. Before joining Temple, Dr. Fisher was a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow (2009-2010) and a UNCF-Merck Postdoctoral Fellow (2010-2012) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, jointly mentored by Dr. Robert Langer and Dr. Daniel Anderson. He obtained a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel University in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin under the supervision of Dr. Nicholas Peppas. His current research is focused on the bottom-up fabrication of biomaterials from poly(phenol) (i.e., macromolecular) building blocks. Naturally occurring polyphenols such as lignin and tannins form supramolecular self-assemblies with other biomacromolecules in ways that may be useful in the design of next generation biomaterials. His research group aims to understand and mimic these interactions by designing bioinspired poly(phenols) with well defined architecture and controllable redox properties.
