Biography

Shivayogi V. Hiremath completed his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in the field of Rehabilitation Sciences. His dissertation project focused on developing and evaluating a physical activity monitor system for individuals who use manual wheelchairs. He obtained his postdoctoral training at the Human Rehabilitation and Neural Engineering Laboratory. His training involved working with individuals with paralysis (such as spinal cord injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and brachial plexus injury) to achieve direct brain control of assistive devices using an electrocortiocography-based brain-computer interface system. He was a recipient of the Mary Switzer Research Fellowship (2011-12) from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research and the PVA Postdoctoral Fellowship (2015-16) from the Paralyzed Veterans of America Research Foundation.

Research Interest

His research focuses on: 1) studying health and physical activity patterns of people with disabilities in the community through wearable sensors and smartphone-based technologies, and 2) developing and applying novel physical activity monitoring and feedback technology, which when combined with behavioral programs would improve the health and physical activity of people with disabilities.
