Jason Sawyer

Biography

Dr. Jason Sawyer is an associate professor of beef cattle science in the Department of Animal Science and a joint appointment with Texas AgriLife Research. He also serves as associate head for operations for the department and superintendent of the McGregor Research Center. He received a B.S. degree in rangeland ecology and management from Texas A&M, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in beef cattle nutrition and management from New Mexico State University. Dr. Sawyer teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in beef cattle science, Stocker and Feeder Cattle Management, Advancements in Beef Production, and Beef Cattle Management, as well as a course in research methods for animal science. As a member of the graduate faculty, he advises a number of students pursuing M.Ag., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Dr. Sawyer’s research interests revolve around beef cattle production systems, with a special emphasis on stocker cattle production systems and upstream and downstream impacts of management inputs. Specific research interests include enhancing production efficiency in forage systems, manipulation of nutrient partitioning, and decision support for beef cattle production systems. In addition to teaching and research commitments, Dr. Sawyer has managerial responsibility for the department’s AgriLife Research Center at McGregor, Texas and for a number of other research, teaching, and extension facilities located in and around College Station. Before joining the faculty at Texas A&M University, Dr. Sawyer held a joint research and Extension beef cattle specialist position at New Mexico State University’s Clayton Livestock Research Center.
