Biography

I am better known to my younger patients as Dr. Ali Baba.  I am a pediatric dental specialist with active private and hospital based dental surgery practices in New York City. I was born and raised in Tehran until age 13 when I immigrated to San Francisco Bay Area to avoid an early draft during the Iran Iraq War. After working as a research associate and staff scientist in the area of human genetics and molecular biology at UCSF's Laboratory of Molecular Otology and Incyte Genomics for six years, I returned to school to study for my Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) at the University of California, San Francisco.  I have completed externships with the craniofacial and cleft lip/palate teams at both UCSF and Stanford Medical Centers and continued to be involved with treatment of children with cleft lip and palate at The Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and Long Island Jewish Hospital's Hagedorn Cleft Palate & Craniofacial Centers as a rotating pediatric dental resident. I completed my pediatric dental specialty training at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn and NYU College of Dentistry. I completed additional training in light wire orthodontic treatment with Dr. Richard Conlin and Chanda Cale in 2007 and pre-surgical naso-alveolar molding therapy (NAM) of cleft lip/palate patients at NYU's Institute of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery in 2008 with Dr. Barry Grayson.  I currently serve as the director of the pediatric dental medicine and surgery division and the residency program director at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. I have had to fortune of co-founding the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center's new Dental Clinic, a facility that will serve at risk youth's oral health needs at no charge.  My greatest passion lies in coming up with ways to increase access to high quality health care services, and particularly in oral health to under served children and adolescents and pregnant mothers. I have been working to use the power of social entrepreneurship to help bring this about. My clinical interests are in medical management of early childhood caries, pre-surgical dentofacial treatment of cleft lip/palate patients, adolescent dental medicine for at risk youth and pre-natal dental care. I have expertise in treatment of medically complex pediatric patients for dental surgery under sedation and or general anesthesia. I am also an active member of the Mount Sinai Craniofacial Team. Beyond Mount Sinai, I work with my siblings and rest of the family and a team of providers within a network of private practice dental clinics in Queens, Bronx and Brooklyn where we are focused on coming up with innovative ways to deliver high quality dental care to all children with a special focus on under served communities.  To better do this we have joined a team of like minded design professionals and founded helloLAB through which seek to use design thinking and process to better tackle health disparities. We also founded helloGIVE to organize local and international (in collaboration with Operation Smile & Emergency USA) medical and dental donations, outreach, missions and educational programs.  I finally ran the New York Marathon in 2010 to raise money for the Adolescent Health Center and hope to do it again in 2011.  Persian poetry and large format calligraphy are my usual escapes every chance I get.
