Biography

Dr. Safi obtained his PhD in Biological sciences from the University of Seville, Spain. His doctoral dissertation titled “Molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Seville, Spain”. He then spent 1 year at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences as postdoctoral fellow, where he initiated his research interests on Mycobacterium tuberculosis drug resistance. His second postdoctoral position was at the University of Texas Health Center, where he was trained in the immunology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Dr. Safi joined UMDNJ/Rutgers in 2004. His main research interests are focused on the mechanisms of drug resistance in M. tuberculosis. His research emphasizes the use of Next Generation Sequencing to elucidate novel mechanisms of evolution and dynamics of antimicrobial resistance in M. tuberculosis.
