Biography
Dr. Scott Merz is co-founder and CEO of MC3 Inc., a medical device consultancy based in Ann Arbor, MI. Scott initially founded MC3 Inc. in 1990 to commercialize a blood pump he had developed while working as a graduate student in the lab of university surgeon Dr. Robert Bartlett. Realizing the potential of the invention, Scott decided to go beyond his master's degree to pursue his PhD, developing a thesis on the automatic control of heart-lung machines. Together they formed a company called Michigan Critical Care Consultants—MC3—to receive SBIR funding and further commercialize their technology, which they later sold to Medtronic. Decades later he continues to be a serial entrepreneur, helping take six companies from various stages of development through the FDA to the marketplace. In addition, he has negotiated several licensing and strategic partnerships in the cardiovascular space for MC3 Inc. Scott received his B.S. in Electric and Biomedical Engineering at Duke University and his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan.
