Samuel O. Thier

Biography

Dr. Samuel O. Thier, M.D., serves as a Professor of Medicine and Health Care Policy, Emeritus at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Thier served as the Chief Executive Officer of Partners HealthCare System, Inc. from July 1, 1996 to December 1, 2002. Previously, Dr. Thier served as the President of The Massachusetts General Hospital from 1994 to 1997 and President of Brandeis University from 1991 to 1994. He served as the President of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Their serves as a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board at United Therapeutics Corporation. He serves as a Member of Advisory Board at Pubget, Inc. He served as a Director of Charles River Laboratories, Inc. He serves as a Member of Board of Overseers at Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association College Retirement Equities Fund. He serves as a Trustee Emeritus of Cornell University and the Chairman of The Commonwealth Fund. Dr. Thier serves as a Director of Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. He served as an Independent Director of Charles River Laboratories International Inc., from 2000 to May 7, 2013. He served as a Director of Merck & Co., Inc. from 1994 to May 25, 2010 and its Lead Director since April 24, 2007. Dr. Thier holds an M.D. from the State University of New York at Syracuse.
