Biography
Stephan Stohler's research and teaching interests are in the areas of public law and comparative politics, with a particular focus on the politics of constitutional interpretation. Stohler, who holds both a Ph.D. and J.D., is currently working on a book manuscript that challenges broadly held notions that courts have the final say on matters of constitutional interpretation. The manuscript examines how judges in India, South Africa and the United States instead work in partnership with elected officials to reinterpret constitutional equality rights in a variety of policy areas. At Rockefeller College, Stohler teaches courses in public law. Stohler earned his Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and bachelor's degree from the University of Washington.
