Biography
Dr. Jeremy Zelkowski, associate professor of secondary mathematics education, received his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Ohio University in 2008. He currently is the lead faculty member in mathematics education in the College of Education and teaches a wide range of courses (see his CV). Dr. Zelkowski’s teaching emphasizes rigor and relevance through student-centered inquiry for knowledge and skills that engage preservice and inservice teachers to develop and improve the mathematics teaching and learning for students in K-12. His research intersects the use of measurement in teacher training and classroom observations, as well as mathematical college-readiness policy and practice. He has published research manuscripts in top-tier research journals such as The Journal of Mathematical Behavior and The Journal of Research on Technology in Education, as well as publishing teaching methods articles in The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ (NCTM) top-tier practitioner journal, The Mathematics Teacher. The Mathematics Classroom Observation Protocol for Practices (MCOP2), just recently published, has gained national use in education research. His research has been used in school districts opting to move away from block scheduling in the high schools to year-long or modified block schedules so that students are always immersed in the study of mathematics throughout high school to maximize student college-readiness. Dr. Zelkowski is a T3 National Instructor, Past-President of the Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics (2014-16), treasurer of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators of Alabama, and Chair of the NCTM Affiliate Relations Committee (2016-18). His hobbies outside of his academic life include travel with family and friends, time at the beach, boating, water-skiing, and home improvement projects.
