Biography
Capitalising on his experience in immunopharmacology, Tai-Ping Fan embarked on a quest to transform the art of ethnopharmacology into a rigorous evidence-based science of healthcare and wellness. With an interdisciplinary approach, he and his collaborators have investigated the cellular and molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis. From clinically effective herbs, they use 'omics to discover and optimize phytochemicals for prevention/treatment of diseases where there is excessive (e.g. cancer, atherosclerosis) or inadequate angiogenesis (e.g. myocardial infarct, chronic wound). He was the Founding Editor-in-Chief of ANGIOGENESIS (1997-2004), and a Deputy Coordinator of an FP7-funded Coordination Action - Good Practice in TCM Research in the Post-genomic Era (GP-TCM; 2009-2012). The overall aim of the project was to inform best practices and harmonize research of the safety and efficacy of TCM in EU Member States and China using a functional genomics approach. Specifically, he led a work package on the global regulation of botanical drugs and herbal products. His current research interests encompass the scientific basis of ethnopharmacology and its global impact on health and wellness.
