Biography

Professor Cullen received his Ph.D. in sociology and education from Columbia University in 1979. He has published over 300 works in the areas of crime and deviance theory, corrections, public opinion, white-collar crime, and sexual victimization. He is author of Rethinking Crime and Deviance Theory: The Emergence of a Structuring Tradition and is co-author of Reaffirming Rehabilitation, Corporate Crime Under Attack: The Ford Pinto Case and Beyond, Criminological Theory: Context and Consequences, Criminology, Combating Corporate Crime: Local Prosecutors at Work, Unsafe in the Ivory Tower: The Sexual Victimization of College Women, Correctional Theory: Context and Consequences, and Environmental Corrections: A New Paradigm for Supervising Offenders in the Community. He has edited a number of volumes, including most recently The Oxford Handbook of Criminological Theory, The American Prison: Imagining a Different Future, Sisters in Crime Revisited: Bringing Gender into Criminology, and Challenging Criminological Theory: The Legacy of Ruth Rosner Kornhauser. He is Past President of the American Society of Criminology and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. In 2010, he was awarded ASC’s Edwin H. Sutherland Award. From 2010 to 2014, he served on the Office of Justice Programs Science Advisory Board for the U.S. Department of Justice. In the graduate program, he teaches Structural Theories of Crime and Criminal Justice Research Practicum

Research Interest

Professor Cullen received his PhD in sociology and education from Columbia University in 1979. He is past editor of Justice Quarterly and Journal of Crime and Justice, and was president of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. He is a fellow of both the ACJS and the American Society of Criminology. He is author of Rethinking Crime and Deviance Theory and is co-author of Reaffirming Rehabilitation, Corporate Crime Under Attack: The Ford Pinto Case and Beyond, Criminological Theory: Context and Consequences, Criminology, and Combating Corporate Crime: Local Prosecutors at Work. He is co-editor of Contemporary Criminological Theory, Offender Rehabilitation: Effective Correctional Intervention, and Criminological Theory: Past to Present - Essential Readings. He teaches theory and philosophy of corrections, structural theories of crime, early intervention in criminal justice, and criminal justice research practicum.
