Biography

Dr. Maureen McCunn is a graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania, where she also spent two years in internal medicine, followed by residency in anesthesiology at Thomas Jefferson University In Philadelphia. Dr. McCunn completed 2 years of Critical Care/ECMO/Trauma fellowship and was a faculty member at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland for 13 years. There she served as the Medical Director of the Neurotrauma Critical Care Unit and the Physician Director of Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies. She received the "Teacher of the Year" award twice for Surgical Critical Care in Maryland, and again at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she worked as the Trauma Liaison between the Department of Anesthesiology and the Division of Trauma Surgery for 5 years. She returned to the Shock Trauma Center in 2014. Dr. McCunn received her master's degree in International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C.. She currently sits on the WHO Committee for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Committee on Trauma and Emergency Preparedness, and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) membership committee. She is on the board of directors and a founding member of the Trauma Anesthesiology Society, and created the first Acute Care Anesthesiology fellowship in the country - all dedicated to the improvement of global trauma care. Throughout her career, Dr. McCunn has worked to ensure that each patient receives optimal trauma care, and that resources are distributed equitably. She has collaborated with anesthesiologists, surgeons, emergency medicine physicians and nurses from countries across the world in both educational and research projects to enhance patient care and save lives. Her global experience and exposure solidifies her expertise. Dr. McCunn's vision is to influence Maryland and U.S. health care policy in order to guarantee that patients who are victims of the disease of trauma have a "medical home" and care for life.

Research Interest

Her current research includes studies that investigate leadership qualities of the trauma team leader (e.g. gender), and collaboration characteristics of trauma team members. She has ongoing work on an NIH funded trauma project in Egypt, has worked with EMS development and teaches trauma courses in India, and volunteered at a trauma hospital in Vietnam. Maureen mentors undergraduates, medical school students and anesthesiology residents who have an interest in global health/trauma care.
