Biography
Fadia T. Shaya PhD, MPH, is professor (tenured) in the Department of Pharmaceutical Health Services Research (PHSR) at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, vice chair for academic affairs in the department, and a member of the faculty in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is the director of research for the Center for Innovative Pharmacy Solutions (CIPS) and associate director for the Center on Drugs and Public Policy (CDPP). Most recently, she was named director of the Behavioral Health Research and Resource Team (BHRT).
Research Interest
Dr. Shaya’s work focuses on building strategic partnerships to target addictions, alcohol, prescription drugs and other substances misuse in Maryland communities and beyond. The goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of misuse of medications and other substances, and to work with pharmaceutical and medical communities on the risks of overprescribing to young adults. Her team brings drug abuse prevention activities and education to schools, communities, parents, health care systems, insurers, pharmacists, physicians and their patients, and track reductions in adverse events and overdoses. Dr. Shaya’s program directly supports national goals of prevention of substance abuse and mental illness, and also addresses behavioral health disparities.
