Biography

David A. Brown is a Professor of Electrical Engineering, Adjunct Professor of Physics and Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Prof. Brown research is the area of Engineering Acoustics, Applied Physical Acoustics and Underwater Electroacoustic Transducers. His current interests are in the area of transducer modeling and training of undergraduate and graduate students in acoustics. His teaching focus is on the Fundamentals of Acoustics, Vibration and Sound, Underwater Acoustic, and Acoustic Transducers, and specifically acoustic demonstrations that support all of these courses. The graduate and undergraduate acoustic courses are an integral part of the department’s focus on marine applications including specializations in applied acoustics, transducers, and underwater acoustics signal processing.Dr. Brown received his Ph.D. in Engineering Acoustics in 1991 jointly from the Department of Physics and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the US Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) on work related to fiber optic interferometry and ellipsoidal shells used for acoustic hydrophones. He also received his MS also from NPS (’88), and obtained both degrees while working full time as a research scientist in the Physics Department. Dr. Brown is a member of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), where he serves as an Associate Editor of JASA in the specialization of Acoustic Transduction, Acoustical Measurements, Instrumentation, and Applied Acoustics. He also serves as the President of the Narragansett Chapter (Southeastern New England) of the ASA society.

Research Interest

Transducer modeling, Training of undergraduate and graduate students in engineering acoustics.
