Biography

Dr. Antonio Nanni is a structural engineer interested in construction materials, their structural performance, and field application. His interests are in the fields of civil infrastructure sustainability and renewal. Nanni chairs the University of Miami College of Engineering’s Department of Civil, Architectural & Environmental Engineering, where he also is a professor and the inaugural Senior Scholar. He is also Professore Ordinario, Dipartimento di Strutture per l’Ingegneria e l’Architettura at the Università di Napoli – Federico II, in Naples, Italy. Nanni, a structural engineer, is interested in construction materials and their structural performance and field application, including monitoring and renewal, with a focus on the sustainability of buildings and civil infrastructure. He is the co-director of two federally funded centers: The National Science Foundation’s Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for the Integration of Composites Into Infrastructure and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s University Transportation Center for Research on Concrete Applications for Sustainable Transportation. During the past 30 years, Nanni has studied concrete and advanced composite-based systems as the principal investigator on a number of projects sponsored by federal and state agencies and private industry. His research in materials and structures has impacted the work of several technical committees in the United States and abroad. Nanni is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering (American Society of Civil Engineers) and serves on the editorial board of other technical journals. He has advised more than 60 graduate students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in the field, published more than 200 papers in refereed journals, published more than 320 papers in conference proceedings and co-authored two books. Nanni has maintained a balance between academic work and practical experience and has received several awards, including 2015 Engineer of the Year Award – ASCE Miami-Dade Branch; 2014 IIFC Medal – International Institute for FRP in Construction; ASCE 2012 Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research; and Engineering News-Record Award of Excellence for 1997 (Top 25 Newsmakers in Construction). He was also elected a member of the American Concrete Institute board of directors for 2016-2019, a founding fellow of the International Institute for FRP in Construction in 2004, a fellow with the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1999 and a fellow with the American Concrete Institute in 1998. He is a registered professional engineer in Italy and the U.S. states of Florida, Pennsylvania, Missouri and Oklahoma.
