Biography
Dr. Carlos Abril is Professor of Music Education and Director of Undergraduate Music Education at the Frost School of Music. He teaches courses in philosophy of music education, music in childhood, culture and music education, and qualitative research methods. Dr. Abril has conducted extensive research focusing on sociocultural issues in the areas of music education, music education policy, and music perception. His writing contributions encompasses the equivalent of 14 chapters that can be found in several books, and 30 articles that have appeared in numerous professional journals. He co-edited the books Teaching General Music: Approaches, Issues, and Viewpoints (Oxford) and Musical Experience in Our Lives: Things We Learn and Meanings We Make (Rowman & Littlefield). In addition, Dr. Abril has served on over ten editorial boards in North America, South America, and Europe, including Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, and Revista Complutense Investigación en Educación Musical. An internationally recognized music education scholar and educator, Dr. Abril has presented over 100 papers, keynotes, and workshops all around the world, including the United States, China, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Malaysia, Spain, Greece, and Italy. He has been a visiting scholar/faculty at Universities around North American, including Northwestern, Penn State, Ohio State, University of Oregon, Western University, and Louisiana State University. He served as an educational consultant and workshop leader for Ravinia’s community music programs in Chicago for over eight years. He currently serves on the Executive Board of the National Association for Music Education Research Council. Dr. Abril’s music arrangements and instructional materials are published by World Music Press and as part the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill textbook series, Spotlight on Music. He is fully certified in Orff Schulwerk and has received extensive training in Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Prior to joining the University of Miami, Dr. Abril was Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at Northwestern University. He received his Ph.D. in music education at The Ohio State University, an M.M. in performance at the Cincinnati College - Conservatory of Music, and a B.M. in music education at the Frost School of Music. He is also a former general music and choral educator in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, where he was honored as Region V Teacher of the Year and with the Cervantes Outstanding Educator Award.
