Biography

Helena Solo-Gabriele is the associate dean for research at the College of Engineering and also holds an appointment as professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. Solo-Gabriele graduated from the University of Miami with a bachelor’s and master’s in Civil Engineering in 1987 and 1988, respectively. In 1995, she received her PhD in civil and environmental engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and joined the University engineering faculty that same year.

Research Interest

Helena Solo-Gabriele is interested in Relationships Between the Environment and Health. Contaminant Fate and Transport. Microbial Contaminants in the Environment and Their Transmission Pathways. Oceans and Human Health. Environmental and Human Health Impacts of Heavy Metals including those from pressure treated wood. Environmental Hydrology.Her research projects have included work on hydrology in the Everglades, the environmental impact of CCA-treated wood, and water-borne microbes. She has led curriculum development for atmospheric and marine-based interdisciplinary health-based training, and has coordinated student design competitions focused on Cuba’s infrastructure.
