Biography

Dr. Boucher teaches courses in the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs (Complex Care and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner courses, respectively) and serves as a reader on N699 projects.. In addition, she conducts clinical site visits for students in the pediatric nurse practitioner program and also precepts pediatric nurse practitioner students at her clinical practice in Brighton, Michigan.  When teaching nursing students, Dr. Boucher strives to foster the development of caring, safe practitioners. In this pursuit, she believes that students and faculty should work together and treat each other with respect, challenging one another to reach their maximum potential.

·         Prescription medication misuse ·         Abuse of controlled substances ·         Gender, sexual orientation, and substance abuse ·         Medication diversion Dr. Carol Boyd also holds U-M appointments as Professor, Women's Studies Department, LSA; Research Professor, Addiction Research Center, Dept. of Psychiatry; Research Professor, Institute for Research on Women & Gender. She has conducted mixed-method studies that use innovative technologies to examine the relationship between gender and health behaviors. Her first NIH-funded research began in Detroit examining the family relationships of female drug users; however, in 1987 she expanded her focus to include attachment within the mother-daughter relationship and its role in reproducing mothering behaviors. Dr. Boyd is known as a methodologist who designs studies aimed at hidden populations (e.g., drug users, adolescents, prisoners, low resource communities). She has received funding for her research from the National Institutes of Health, State of Michigan, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, National Institute of Justice, and USAID, as well as a number of smaller foundations. Dr. Boyd has: 1) Used innovative web-based methods to survey adolescents and young adults; 2) Collected data with mobile phones from low literate women in Liberia; 3) Conducted mixed method studies of women who smoke crack cocaine, and 4) Conducted secondary analysis focused on sexual minorities using pre-existing national databases. Her current research focuses on prescription medication adherence and misuse, maternity waiting homes in Liberia and clinical interventions to increase medication adherence in high-risk populations. Dr. Boyd’s international experiences includes teaching, mentoring and research in China, Ghana, Liberia, Poland and Zambia.
