Biography
Dr. Casida has extensive teaching experience in hospital and academic settings. Over the past 12 years, he has been teaching undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students in teaching-focused and research-intensive universities. His teaching style is grounded in theoretical and empirical knowledge of educating health care professionals. Dr. Casida is a passionate and dedicated teacher, consistently upholding a high standard of teaching and learning. He believes that teachers should expect beyond the minimum standard performance from students and help them achieve that expectation by believing in and cultivating students' potentials to excel. Dr. Casida also believes that teaching and learning shared accountabilities for students and teachers: Teachers facilitate while the students direct the learning process. It is his responsibility, however, to provide the students with appropriate course structure, educational resources, and an environment conducive to positive learning experiences and outcomes. Dr. Casida aspires to serve as a role model for the next generations of clinical experts, leaders, scholars, and health policy makers, to continually influence students as lifelong learners, and to be an excellent steward of the University and the nursing profession at large.
Research Interest
Dr. Casida’s program of research focuses on self-management and caregiving in populations living with complex conditions including, but not limited to patients with advanced heart failure requiring implantation of a ventricular assist device, total artificial heart, or cardiac surgery. In the context of self-management, Dr. Casida investigates mechanisms and interventions related to patient’s treatment adherence, self-efficacy, and symptom management (e.g., sleep disturbances). Additionally, he investigates the degree to which the patient’s informal (e.g., family member) and formal (e.g., nurses) caregivers contribute to the patient’s health, morbidity, healthcare utilization, and quality of life outcomes. Notably, Dr. Casida is passionate in explicating and documenting the bedside nurses and advanced practice nurses' contributions to organizational performance at the patient care unit, department, hospital, and healthcare system’s levels.
