Laboratory Supervisor/Chemical Hygiene Manager
Chemistry Department
University of Mount Union

Biography

She chose my undergraduate major of medical technology because I was naturally inclined toward science and math, liked working with my hands and was aware that there was a great demand for registered medical technologists. Going on to graduate school for chemistry after working in the field of medical technology for several years was a natural fit. Professional Accomplishments Working as the laboratory manager at SeaWorld was an incredible privilege. I was able to work around such beautiful marine mammals, birds and fish every day in the company of dedicated professionals. Teaching Style I ask questions of students as we are covering material and try to engage everyone in the room at least once during a lecture. Before every class session, I monitor the news media and popular culture for topics that relate to subjects we are discussing. Interesting Student Lab I am working on our new gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer to develop an interesting student lab. No, it’s not CSI, but it is the same instrument used on the show. Best Part of the Job I love having students tell me that I have helped them understand and even enjoy what can sometimes be a challenging subject. That’s why we are all here. Science Building Bracy Hall is a beautiful building with many windows that let in as much natural light as possible. The labs are spacious, safe and well equipped. Students Come First Mount Union requires that faculty members place good teaching as a number one priority rather than secondary to a personal research and publishing agenda. Students come first. Healthcare Preparation With the inclusion of majors such as medical technology and nursing, Mount Union recognizes the urgent need for well-trained employees in healthcare. I’ve worked in many different types of clinical, industry and research labs and can share that real-world experience with students. Textbook knowledge is great, but textbook knowledge plus personal experience is better. Education B.S., Medical Technology, State University of New York at Plattsburgh M.S., Chemistry, Youngstown State University
