Peggy Vagts

Biography

Peggy Vagts received degrees in flute performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Morningside College.  Her principal flute teachers were Marcel Moyse and Robert Cole. She has been a recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award at UNH and a winner of the National Flute Association’s “Competition for Professional Performers.”  An active performer, Prof. Vagts has been a member of the New Hampshire Symphony, New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Atlantic Chamber Soloists, Wisconsin Chamber Symphony, the Sioux City Symphony, and the UNH Faculty Woodwind Quintet. She has a special interest in the music of women composers and has presented lecture-recitals on this topic at the First National Congress on Women in Music and at conventions of the National Flute Association, the Music Teachers National Association, the College Music Society, and the Greater Boston Flute Association. Her recording with pianist Arlene Kies, Persistence: Works by Women, 1850-1950, was released in 2014. She has appeared as concerto soloist with the New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra, Granite State Symphony, Atlantic Chamber Orchestra, and White Mountain Musical Arts Festival.  Prof. Vagts was Chair of the Department of Music at UNH from 1997-2003 and Senior Faculty Fellow in the College of Liberal Arts from 2007-2013.  She taught at Regent’s University in London 2014-2015 while serving as on-site director of the UNH London program.
