Biography
Broache received his doctorate in political science from Columbia University in May 2015. His dissertation examined the effects of International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutions initiated during ongoing conflict on atrocities. For this project, Broache conducted fieldwork in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he interviewed over 100 current and former members of armed groups and other relevant actors about their knowledge and perceptions of the ICC. Several papers based on this research are currently under review or in preparation for publication.In connection with Broache's interest in the ICC and international criminal law more generally, he served as an NGO delegate to the annual meeting of the Assembly of States Parties of the ICC in 2012, and he was part of the international team of experts that developed the Belfast Guidelines on Amnesty and Accountability released in 2014. Before starting his doctoral studies, Broache worked for an international humanitarian NGO in western Tanzania.
Research Interest
Michael Broache studies international relations and comparative politics, with a substantive emphasis on the role and impact of international law in regulating armed conflict and a regional focus on Sub-Saharan Africa.
