Biography
Charles J. Parker, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Divsion of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies, Department of Internal Medicine, at theUniversity of Utah, the Huntsman Hospital and the George E. Whalen VA Medical Center, Salt Lake City, UT. As a Hematologist, his research interests include paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), hemochromatosis and porphyria. Dr. Charles Parker is a native North Carolinian and a graduate of the University of North Carolina where he was a Morehead Scholar. He received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1975. Dr. Parker trained in Internal Medicine at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill and completed a Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at Duke University. He was on the faculty at Duke from 1981-1984 after which he joined the faculty of the University of Utah School of Medicine. Dr. Parker has a special interest in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), and he has authored more than 50 original articles, reviews and book chapters dealing with that subject. Dr. Parker has a national and international reputation in the field and served as President of the International PNH Interest Group. PNH is a type of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia that is associated with bone marrow failure, and as a result of investigation into the relationship between PNH and these processes, Dr. Parker has a special interest in acquired and congential bone marrow failure syndromes and in immune-mediated cytopenias including immune-mediated thrombocytopenia and autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Dr. Parker also has a special interest in the porphyrias and in disorders of iron metabolism including hereditary hemochromatosis. Dr. Parker is currently Editor-in-Chief of The Hematologist, a publication of The American Society of Hematology. Dr. Parker received his MD from University of North Carolina. He received training in medicine and Hematology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and Duke University. In the past, Dr. Parker served as President of the International Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria Interest Group. He is current a member of the Executive Council of that organizaton.
