Biography

Dr. Shafritz has substantial experience operating on the entire upper limb. His practice focuses on Shoulder Joint Replacement and Reconstruction Surgery including Total Shoulder Replacement, Arthroscopy, Rotator Cuff Repair, Fractures and Dislocations of the Shoulder. He utilizes procedures which are at the forefront of the medical community's knowledge, with the latest technology available. He also has a particular interest in Elbow and Wrist Arthroscopy and Arthritis Surgery, and performs all procedures common to Hand Surgery including repair of hand and wrist fractures, tendon repairs, carpal tunnel releases, removal of ganglions, trigger finger releases, and ulnar nerve surgery. In addition, Dr. Shafritz is fellowship trained in Microsurgery, and he always uses a microscope to repair nerves and blood vessels when indicated.

Research Interest

Dr. Shafritz's current research interests include the study of upper extremity injuries occurring in skiers and snowboarders, outcomes after surgical treatment of fractures of the proximal humerus, and the function of the clavicle on shoulder girdle mechanics. At present, he is writing a textbook chapter on Shoulder Arthroplasty for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Shafritz has presented his research at national and international conferences. In addition, Dr. Shafritz has been involved in extensive molecular biology research studying the molecular mechanisms and genetic regulation of disorders of heterotopic ossification and his work has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
