Research Interest

Currently is Research Leader of the Animal Disease Research Unit of the Agricultural Research Service, USDA and Professor, Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology. Research is primarily collaborative and focused on testing hypotheses which define parameters of tick-borne disease transmission and pathogenesis. Hypotheses are formulated concerning equine babesiosis (Babesia equi and Babesia caballi) and bovine anaplasmosis (Anaplasma marginale). Opportunities for trainees exist in exploring research problems associated with these tick-borne diseases. In the broader context the Animal Disease Research Unit’s current mission additionally includes solving problems associated with the following infectious diseases: scrapie and chronic wasting disease (transmissible spongiform encephalopathies), malignant catarrhal fever virus, bovine babesiosis and ovine progressive pneumonia virus. Trainee opportunities within these areas are possible through collaborations within/between the Animal Disease Research Unit and Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology.
