Biography
Education: BS Electrical & Computer Engineering University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth High Distinction 1985 MS Electrical & Computer Engineering University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth 1987 PhD Electrical & Computer Engineering University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth 2012 The best thing about being an electrical or computer engineer (I've been called both!) is that it is a profession that can literally take you anywhere. My current research involves species level identification and localization of marine mammals in the open ocean. I've been able to blend my background in ECE subjects like digital signal processing, classification theory, and real-time computing with other technical topics like underwater acoustics and my lifelong love for the ocean. I get to work with an amazing array of colleagues from across the country and across Europe—marine biologists, oceanographers, engineers, and even statisticians. We each bring our own expertise to the problem of studying the impact of anthropogenic noise (sonar, construction, oil exploration, and shipping) on marine mammals in the wild. The world of work is so interdisciplinary—in any field you can think of, there is the need for tools to measure, study, process, and analyze. Electrical and computer engineers are the tool builders!
