Biography
Education: BS SUNY Buffalo 1975 MS SUNY Buffalo 1976 PhD Case Western Reserve University 1983 As an educator, I enjoy teaching and mentoring students. At the undergraduate level, I teach advanced biomedical instrumentation and laboratory-based courses that relate fundamental science and engineering concepts to biomedical applications. In addition to classroom teaching, I also enjoy interacting with students less formally in a teaching laboratory setting and mentoring students in capstone design projects. At the graduate level, I teach medical instrumentation and derive great satisfaction from encouraging and working closely with my graduate students as they develop intellectually and strive to achieve their dreams. As a scientist, I like to apply my background in Electrical Engineering to innovate biomedical instrumentation. My research laboratory is focused on telemedicine and wearable devices for vital sign monitoring. We develop noninvasive optical-based sensors to measure blood oxygen saturation and extract heart rate information. We apply sophisticated real-time signal processing algorithms to reduce the effects of motion artifacts in wearable sensor applications.
