Biography

Dr. Frances (Fran) Thompson is a Special Volunteer with the Risk Factor Assessment Branch (RFAB) of the Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program (EGRP) in NCI's Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS). Dr. Thompson was a Program Director in RFAB; she retired from the Federal government after more than 25 years of service in January 2017. Her work has focused on increasing understanding and improvement of dietary assessment methods for population research. Dr. Thompson's research has focused on development and evaluation of assessment instruments, in particular, short dietary assessment tools used in large population surveys (National Health Interview Survey; California Health Interview Survey). Before joining NCI, Dr. Thompson was a research investigator at Cornell University, where she examined dietary patterns, and she worked with the New York State Nutrition Surveillance Program monitoring soup kitchens and food pantries. Prior to that she was a research investigator at the University of Michigan, where she examined the reproducibility of past diet reports on an NCI-funded grant.
